KFormat and DeviceKit-disks

KFormat

KFormat

I waited for a long time to play with DeviceKit-disks (DeviceKit-disks is a rather interesting daemon that allows developers to not clutter their code with format related stuff) and now this week I had time to start working on KFormat. The idea behind KFormat is to replace KFloppy then the next step will be to implement KDiskManager and a KDE disk management library.
The first revision of KFormat is now under development in KDE svn and I will blog when I’ll have more interesting updates.

Great idea! Right click “format device” in Dolphin would also be a good idea! Another idea that comes to my mind (and even more useful that the “format” one) is the possibility to change device label: that would be really useful to easily change USB sticks label.
Will this be integrated in Solid? Or is it a different thing?

yeah finally! waited for such a long time for a tool like this! thanks :)

oh an please give it another name…

Looks quite nice. But the device dropdown menu is too close to the window controls on the title bar (both visually and from a usability standpoint: clicking just some pixels above will hide or close the window).
Suggestion: Put a descriptive text above as a separation: “Format the selected device with a filesystem” or something similar, so you also know what this dialog is supposed to do.

Woooooo, you actually did it, you started DeviceKit-disks integration.
Do you remember how we fantasized about the nice stuff we wanted to do with it a long long time ago – I can’t believe this is starting to become true.

    Thanks a lot!

Finally somebody will implement this! A lot of people ask for this program in the brainstorm forum.
    Thank you.

i know that is only a first revision, but what about using the name of the divece like in widows instaed of /dev/sdxy ?

Will you be integrating some of QtParted later on when you do KDiskManager?

  10. ix says:

May I propose a new name? “DiskKit”. I thinkg this sounds better

I will do an usability review when it will be ready.

sure, I will use something better.

    >Will you be integrating some of QtParted later on when you do KDiskManager?
not really, I will use DeviceKit-disks partitioning support.

Probably we’ll need a DeviceKit-disks solid backend soon.

Great work, horrible user interface (sorry).

This is one very important piece that has been sorely missing so far.

    Great work!
As all this is about Device-Kit, are there any plans for a Device-Kit Solid backend? AFAIK Fedora is going to switch to it in near future, so a backend for solid is necessary (or are HAL and Dev-Kit compatible so that no changes are required?)

Probably I will write a new solid backend.

Please don’t have “kformat” in the title. imho it shouldn’t behave like an application, but just as part of the OS.
kformat shouldn’t be user visible anywhere. It should just always be referred to as Format Disk.
